IPICO Launches Next Generation Electronic Vehicle Identification Solution

Suite of Products Poised For Global Roll-Out

BURLINGTON, ON, Oct. 24 /CNW/ - IPICO Inc. (TSX-V:RFD) ("IPICO" or the
"Company") today announced the launch of its next generation Electronic
Vehicle Identification (EVI) solution consisting of an extended suite of
passive RFID products including tags, readers, middleware and software custom
developed for various vehicle and people identification applications.
The EVI solution provides a means for hands free long distance unique
vehicle identification that enables electronic vehicle registration,
insurance, road tax and tolling applications, law enforcement investigations,
border control measures, pollution clearing verification and intelligent
transport planning systems. The IPICO EVI solution is comprised of passive
Ultra-High-Frequency (UHF) RFID tags attached to the windshields of vehicles,
and readers installed on fixed overhead or roadside structures identifying
vehicles in motion, as well as handheld mobile readers for law enforcement
investigation purposes. These readers use IPICO's new Digital Signal
Processing (DSP) decoders designed to allow for dense reader deployments in
close proximity with limited or no interference. This solution is supported by
proximity or near field RFID readers, as well as credit card type tags used
for drivers' licenses and parking control tickets. The miniature Read/Write
readers with a footprint of approximately three square inches are available
with an USB interface for desktop registration, a Wiegand interface for access
control applications, and in OEM format with an extended antenna for easy
integration into printers.
"We have successfully implemented EVI solutions in a variety of countries
with diverse requirements overcoming reader density challenges while providing
multi-read and write-to capability. This bears testimony to the fact that our
technology is now ready for global deployment", remarked IPICO President
Gordon Westwater. "The anticipated rollout of EVI in the developing world
forms a key element of our strategy to make IPICO a global leader in RFID."

    Developing Countries Embrace EVI

IPICO's EVI solutions have been deployed at numerous reference sites
within developing nations, including South Africa, China, India, Dubai,
Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and various other Latin American countries. The
solutions tested include fleet management, vehicle access control and
electronic toll collection, as well as vehicle licensing pilot sites
implemented in coordination with local transportation authorities in
preparation for expected nation-wide rollouts.
The national transportation authorities in Brazil, South Africa, Egypt,
Malaysia, and a number of other developing countries, have in recent months
announced definitive plans to deploy passive RFID as a compulsory element of
vehicle license discs and/or license plates.
In addition to vehicle related law enforcement, the solutions will also
enable a multiplicity of related applications such as improved traffic
management and control of access to restricted or congested areas. Relevant
examples include China, India and Mexico, where the use of passive RFID is
under consideration to support electronic toll collection and pollution
control systems. In the process a very large market is developing for passive
UHF RFID, with a market potential of hundreds of millions of vehicle tags and
hundreds of thousands of readers.
As part of the qualification process by transportation authorities, the
IPICO solution has been subjected to intensive formal testing in several of
these countries, including Brazil and South Africa, in order to demonstrate
compliance with local requirements for EVI. Amongst other tests the IPICO
solution was successfully qualified on vehicles travelling at speeds of up to
260 km/h, was demonstrated to write new information to tags at speeds of up to
80 km/h, and was shown to read 256 bit user-defined codes from tags at speeds
of up to 160 km/h.

IPICO Inc. is an RFID solution supplier with operations in Canada, USA,
South Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. IPICO produces smart labels and tags
based on the IP-X communication protocol. IPICO's low interference readers are
designed to meet regulatory requirements in many major markets, and allow for
multi-reader rollout in close proximity. IPICO's low cost RFID products are
designed to excel at long read range, fast multi-read anti-collision and high
thru-beam read-speeds of dynamic tag populations. These products are used to
optimize the management of products, equipment, people, animals and processes
within the logistic supply chain and other value chains. For further
