International Day Against Homophobia - May 17 - Dany Turcotte To Receive The 2009 Fight Against Homophobia Award

MONTREAL, May 11 /CNW Telbec/ - Fondation Emergence, the founder of the
International Day Against Homophobia, is giving the 2009 Fight Against
Homophobia Award to Mr. Dany Turcotte, television host and comedian. The award
is being given to him for his clear contribution to the fight against
homophobia. Revealing that he is gay, the jokester of Québec's most popular
talk show Tout le monde en parle has garnered respect from the entire
province. The help and awareness of Tout le monde en parle's main host and
team has enabled him to downplay the fact that he's gay and to succeed in
making all the guests feel comfortable enough to respond.
President of Fondation Emergence Laurent McCutcheon believes that "Dany
Turcotte is a source of inspiration. He's living proof that you can be gay or
lesbian, well-known, professionally successful, and can earn respect from men
and women of all ages."
Mr. McCutcheon concludes: "When a person reveals that they are gay or
lesbian, it's a crucial moment that requires a great deal of courage. When it
is done by a famous person, it has an impact on society as a whole. What I
like is how Dany handles the issue, making it your average subject. What's
more, for parents who seem worried about what's in store for their gay or
lesbian child, he gives them hope and shows that being gay won't jeopardize
their future."
The Award is being presented to him at the National Bank of Canada's main
office by Ms Kathleen Weil, Québec Minister of Justice, Attorney General, and
the Minister in charge of the fight against homophobia. "Mr. Turcotte, you
have chosen to declare publicly your sexual orientation. Your notoriety could
have been an obstacle. Instead you have conquered the public with your courage
and candor. For this, you have won our profound respect and all our
admiration", declared Minister Weil, in awarding the 2009, prize Fight Against
Mr. Dany Turcotte thus joins the list of previous years' award
recipients: Ms Janette Bertrand in 2003, Father Raymond Gravel in 2004, the
Right Honourable Pierre Elliot Trudeau in 2005 (posthumously), Canadian
Members of Parliament who voted in favour of the Civil Marriage Act in 2006,
Mr. Mark Tewksbury in 2007, and Mr. Marc-André Bédard in 2008.

We remind you that Fondation Emergence's mission is to fight prejudice
and that it is the driving force behind the International Day Against
Homophobia. Website:
