TORONTO, Jan. 31 /CNW/ - The Toronto Chapter of the International
Association of Business Communicators (IABC) is proud to announce that
the 2010 IABC/Toronto Communicator of the Year (COTY) Award is being
presented to Peter Aceto, President and CEO of ING DIRECT Canada.
The IABC/Toronto COTY Award annually recognizes a Toronto-area leader
who has demonstrated a sincere commitment to strategic communication
and innovation. Aceto has displayed that commitment consistently in
helping ING DIRECT to become Canada's leading direct bank with over 1.7
million clients and more than $29 billion in total assets, since taking
on the role of CEO in 2008.
A visionary business leader, Aceto has implemented employee
communication and social media programs that have made it possible for
ING DIRECT to take part in online communication platforms and set new
standards for communication in a traditionally conservative industry.
His approachable demeanour and accessible, honest style of leadership
has enabled the promotion of a culture of dialogue among ING DIRECT
employees. Through strong relationships with the company's media
relations team, to high engagement on the social media landscape, Aceto
has been identified by the Hay Group as one of the social media
"Shining Stars" among such icons as Bill Gates and Jack Welch.
"His commitment, innovation, transparency and accessibility have yielded
soaring results to ING DIRECT Canada," explains Bill Walker, General
Manager, Fleishman-Hillard Canada Inc., in his nomination letter. "From
on-the-ground in the call centres, to his 'Ask Peter' forum, Aceto
brings a genuine dedication to his role and truly believes in the
responsibility he has to contribute at the highest level to his team,
to Canadians, and to his family."
"Aceto is a strong communicator with a growing reputation as Canada's
most social CEO," says Carrie MacAfee, President, IABC/Toronto. "It's
quite impressive to interview a recipient, who voluntarily, one year
into the role of CEO, asked employees whether he was the right leader
for the organization. After receiving a resounding 99.8% affirmation,
one employee even commented: 'You had me at Hello'."
"I'm honoured to receive this award and to be among the list of the
outstanding leaders who have received this honour in the past. My focus
on communication at ING DIRECT comes very naturally because the
foundation of our business and our corporate culture is based on trust
and authenticity, two cornerstones of effective communication. I'm a
passionate communicator because I see how it contributes to employee
engagement and helps us deliver on our brand promise, which in turn
drives business results," said Aceto.
The IABC/Toronto Communicator of the Year Award will be formally
presented to Aceto, its 14th recipient, at a special breakfast and networking event on March 30,
2011. For more information, visit http://toronto.iabc.com/.
