MONTREAL, May 9 /CNW Telbec/ - Despite the rain, a large number of attorneys attended last Wednesday's annual general meeting of the Bar of Montreal, to acknowledge the departure of bâtonnier Marc Charbonneau and witness the passing of the torch to Elizabeth Greene, the leader elected for the 2011-2012 term.

Following an assessment of his one-year term at the helm, outgoing Bâtonnier Charbonneau presented the Mérite du Barreau de Montréal award to Michèle Moreau, in recognition of her significant participation in the Bar of Montreal and its activities. In keeping with tradition, the outgoing Bâtonnier then presented the Bar of Montreal key - along with the traditional rod, the historic symbol of this position - to his successor.

Her voice tinged with emotion, Elizabeth Greene - a thirty-year veteran of family law - outlined the topics on which she would focus her attention. Following in her predecessors' footsteps, she intends to ensure continued access to justice, openness to the world and mutual assistance. As an anglophone lawyer, she would also like to advance matters related to gender equality and bilingualism.

Access to justice - The new Bâtonnière will have the pleasure of attending, in the very near future, the inauguration of the Centre de justice de proximité du Grand Montréal - a concrete outcome of the highly effective work done by her predecessors. She also intends to hold the fourth edition of the roundtable on participative justice, continuing a tradition begun by Stephen Schenke. In April 2012, Ms. Greene will also be granted the honour of celebrating the 15th edition of the Salon VISEZ DROIT.

Gender equality - Two other issues on Bâtonnière Greene's agenda are pay equity and women's access to senior management positions. She also looks forward to marking the 70th anniversary of women's entrance into the legal profession, so that these pioneers' trailblazing career path is never forgotten and remains a source of inspiration.

Bilingualism and Openness to the world - Bâtonnière Green also anticipates addressing the issue of translation with respect to the Code of Civil Procedure and judgements handed down by our courts.

She also intends to promote, year-round, the rich contribution of bilingualism and bijuralism by Montreal lawyers, whose expertise is greatly appreciated in the international arena. This expertise led to conclusion of an agreement with the Port-au-Prince Bar, intended to offer Haitian lawyers long-term assistance in rebuilding their justice system. Ms. Greene will travel to Haiti very shortly, to share her expertise with her fellow legal practitioners in that country.

Bâtonnière Greene was also proud to announce that the 7th conference of the Bar of the world's major cities will be held in Montreal this September, thanks to the efforts of Nicolas Plourde, another of her predecessors.

2011-2012 Council members - In working to accomplish the initiatives she has planned, Bâtonnière Greene will draw on the support of her Council, made up of the following members: Catherine Pilon, senior council member; André A. Morin, treasurer; Joséane Chrétien, secretary; Laurent Soustiel, Young Bar Association of Montreal representative; and councillors Luc Deshaies, Karen Kear-Jodoin, Greg Moore, Robert Pancer, Jean-Paul Perron, Michel P. Synnott, Martine L. Tremblay and Simon Tremblay.

The Bar of Montreal was founded in 1849, and its membership comprises more than 13,000 attorneys. Its mission: to promote public protection, through information dissemination and awareness-building activities, and active participation in the administration of justice.
