IESO Awarded LEED® Silver Certification

TORONTO, May 20, 2011 /CNW/ - The Independent Electricity System Operator's (IESO) System Control Centre has been awarded LEED® Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in recognition of the organization's outstanding environmental performance.

A number of successful programs have been implemented by the IESO in the last few years aimed at reducing water and energy use and reducing the company's environmental footprint. The IESO received LEED Silver status in the program called Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance which covers a wide range of initiatives.

"The standards for LEED Silver are extremely high so we're very proud that the IESO's environmental programs have been ranked so well," said Paul Murphy, President and Chief Executive Officer, IESO. "The IESO has a strong commitment to sustainability and we plan to continue our efforts by finding more opportunities including further reducing our energy consumption."

Located in Mississauga, the three-storey building, with an area of approximately 148,000 square feet, was built in 1990 and underwent a 30,000-square-foot expansion in 2002. A green purchasing policy for office and building supplies and a comprehensive waste management system that emphasizes landfill diversion and recycling are just a few of the initiatives that helped the IESO obtain the LEED Silver designation. In addition, water use has been reduced by 34 per cent over the last two years with the installation of new fixtures, sub-metering to track building and cooling tower consumption profiles and a weather station to control lawn irrigation.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and is an internationally recognized green building certification program. LEED uses a points system for evaluating an existing building's environmental performance in the following categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality and innovation in operations.

"With each new LEED-certified building, we get one step closer to USGBC's vision of a sustainable built environment within a generation," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chair, USGBC. "As the newest member of the LEED family of green buildings, the IESO is an important addition to the growing strength of the green building movement."
