IATSE makes peace with ONEXONE charity over Maple Leaf Gardens gala; action against Loblaw to continue.

    TORONTO, Sept. 5 /CNW/ - IATSE Local 58 and the ONEXONE children's
charity have resolved a potential dispute over staging the charity's annual
gala at Maple Leaf Gardens on Monday, September 8. The union had previously
announced it would leaflet the event if the producers of the gala went ahead
with non-union stagecraft technicians. IATSE members have staged every
theatrical and musical event at the Gardens for decades.
The gala will be hosted again this year by actor Matt Damon.
"We had very positive discussions with Joelle Adler and cleared up some
misunderstandings," said David Baer, president of the 110-year old local of
the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Adler is the
President of Diesel Canada and founder of ONEXONE.
"We will continue to pursue our legal action against Maple Leaf Gardens'
owner Loblaw Companies Ltd." said Baer. "There should have been no dispute
about which technicians have the skills and experience, let alone the right,
to perform this work. But we are pleased that this event on behalf of a
wonderful charity will go ahead without a hitch and we congratulate Ms. Adler
and her organization for taking the steps to make that happen.
