Human Rights report provides welcome boost for CNIB

Easier, faster access to information urged for Canadians with
    print disabilities

OTTAWA, Jan. 31 /CNW/ - CNIB's efforts to increase timely access to
information for Canadians with print disabilities have received a boost from
'No Alternative', a Canadian Human Rights Commission report released last
week. The report states that while federal policies are in place for providing
alternative format materials to individuals with a print disability, there is
an urgent need for both increased availability and a simplified process for
ordering such publications.
"The lack of timely access to information is a chronic problem for
Canadians who are blind or living with vision loss," says Cathy Moore,
National Director of Consumer and Government Relations, CNIB.
"In accordance with the Commission's recommendations, CNIB would be
pleased to work with the Government of Canada to improve the provision and
quality of documents in alternative formats, such as audio or braille," says
CNIB is Canada's largest producer of materials in accessible formats, and
offers access to one of the world's largest libraries for people with print
"The federal government has already shown leadership in current efforts
to provide equitable library services to Canadians with a print disability. We
remain hopeful that the issue of access to information for people with print
disabilities will be resolved in an effective and timely manner," says Moore.
