Hudak's $500 Million Property Tax Hike

A vote for Hudak is a vote for a 6% property tax hike in Ottawa

"Now I know some mayors are very eager to spend this free money they're gonna get. And if you look at this year's city budget, Jim Watson spent all the money, and he spent most of it on social services."

    - PC Candidate Randall Denley, Ottawa Citizen Editorial Board Meeting, September 20, 2011

TORONTO, Sept. 29, 2011 /CNW/ -

Tim Hudak's decision to rip up the Province's agreement with municipalities to take back provincial costs will result in $500 million in higher property taxes.

Increases in property taxes hit seniors and small business hardest, and will make it harder for municipalities to deliver services that Ontario families count on every day.

Hudak's property tax increases, and his failure to even speak with the Conservative MPP who has failed to pay his taxes, make a mockery of Hudak's tax pledge today.

"A vote for Tim Hudak is a vote for higher property taxes.  It's clear that Hudak's playing a shell game to cover the $14 billion hole in his platform, and leaves property taxpayers and businesses on the hook.  Tim Hudak just isn't worth the risk."

    - Yasir Naqvi, Ontario Liberal candidate, Ottawa Centre

"Here in Ottawa, Tim Hudak's downloading plan will result in a 6% property tax hike on families and businesses'. As a former regional chair and mayor during the Harris years, I can tell you how difficult it is to balance a budget and deliver necessary services when Queen's Park is dumping their costs on to your books. We can't afford to go back there."

    - Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Liberal candidate, Ottawa West-Nepean

  • On top of cancelling the uploading agreement, Hudak will also download the cost of dealing with hazardous goods by scrapping eco-fees, and he will force municipalities that own local hydro distribution companies to pick up the tab for the stranded hydro debt that the PCs created in the 1990's
  • As part of the last government, Tim Hudak downloaded over $3 billion in costs onto municipalities
  • In contrast, by the time uploading is fully complete, Ontario Liberals will have uploaded over $2.5 billion in annual costs from municipalities
