Housing Visionary Avi Friedman to speak at The Net-Zero Energy Home Awards

    TORONTO, June 4 /CNW/ - The Net-Zero Energy Home (NZEH) Coalition is
pleased to announce that renowned housing visionary Dr. Avi Friedman will
deliver a keynote address at the inaugural Net-Zero Energy Home Awards
reception to be held on June 8, 2009 in Montreal, Quebec. The reception will
take place at the Westin Hotel located at 270 St. Antoine Ouest, in downtown
    Recognized internationally for his housing innovation, particularly in
the case of the Grow Home and Next Home designs, Dr. Friedman was selected by
Wallpaper magazine in 2000 as 1 of 10 people "most likely to change the way we
    "We are excited to have Dr. Friedman address our audience at the Awards
ceremony," says Gordon Shields, Executive Director of the Coalition. "Avi's
ideas and designs serve as an inspiration to many of us in the home builder
sector and we are certain he will leave our audience with the motivation to
design better buildings and the power to feel they can make a difference,"
adds Shields.
    To help advance the market and accelerate the deployment of net-zero
energy homes in Canada, the NZEH Coalition has developed the Net-Zero Energy
Home Award to recognize and celebrate the integration of renewable energy and
energy efficiency in the residential construction industry. Awards will be
given under four categories:

    The "closest to net-zero energy" retrofit project of the year;
    The "closest to net-zero energy" custom builder of the year;
    The "closest to net-zero energy" production builder of the year;
    The Net-Zero Energy Home champion of the year

    A net-zero energy home integrates advanced energy efficiency design and
building materials with onsite renewable energy, which is then capable of
producing an annual output of energy that is equal to the total amount of its
annual purchased energy.
    The award event is unique in nature and will recognize those builders who
are responding to a changing marketplace - one that is increasingly influenced
by concerns for energy security, climate change and health.

    About the Net-Zero Energy Home Coalition
    Established in 2004 by a group of forward-looking homebuilders and
developers, the Net-Zero Energy Home Coalition (www.netzeroenergyhome.ca)
promotes the benefits of more efficient use of zero or very low impact
resources. Resulting in cleaner air and healthier homes for homeowners,
net-zero energy homes also protect the climate and generate economic
opportunities for the manufacturing of energy efficient technologies and
onsite renewable energy generation in Canada's residential marketplace.
