Housing Starts Increase in July

MONCTON, NB, Aug. 9 /CNW/ - Total housing starts in New Brunswick's urban
centres for the month of July were ahead of last year's level. According to
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's preliminary data(1), residential
starts totaled 368 units in July, compared to 339 units during the same period
in 2006.
"The overall increase in residential starts during the month of July was
the result of an increase in both single and multiple starts", said Claude
Gautreau, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for New Brunswick. In urban centres
across the province, multiple starts were slightly ahead of last year's pace
at 170 units, up 5 units from last year's monthly total for July.
Single starts in all three of the province's large urban areas in July
surpassed last year's totals for the same month. Single starts in urban areas
increased slightly in July with 198 starts compared to 174 last year during
the same period. "Though the numbers were up in July, as a result of the
year-to-date decline in overall multiple starts, total year-to-date starts in
the province's urban centres were down by almost 10 per cent", continued
Gautreau.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts in July trailed last
year's total by 12 per cent, down to 16,921 from last year's total of 19,298.
Single-detached starts declined to 8,919 units compared to 9,188 in 2006,
while multiple unit starts declined 21 per cent from 10,110 units last year to
8,002 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 892 starts were recorded in
July 2007 compared to 1,010 units during the same period in 2006.
