Home Hardware Congratulates Communities in Bloom Award Winners

    ST. JACOBS, ON, Sept. 22 /CNW/ - Home Hardware Store Limited, national
sponsor of Communities in Bloom, congratulates the winners of the 2007
competition for their recognition at National Awards Ceremonies held in
Moncton, New Brunswick on September 22nd. The awards, held at the National
Symposium on Parks and Grounds, recognized the best communities from coast to
coast who participated in the 13th annual Communities in Bloom.
    Communities in Bloom, a Canadian organization committed to promoting
community beautification programs through friendly competition, encourages
communities to get residents, businesses and municipalities involved in the
beautification of local parks, homes and public areas. Participating
communities are evaluated by volunteer judges on eight separate criteria:
tidiness, environmental awareness, community involvement, heritage
conservation, urban forest management, landscaped areas, floral displays and
turf and groundcovers.

    Nearly 130 communities participated nationally and more than 500 members
of approximately 80 communities representing all ten Canadian provinces were
in attendance at the awards ceremony.
    Souris, Manitoba was bestowed the Home Hardware Award for Community
Involvement for their exemplary participation from people of all sectors, age
groups and organizations. Mississauga, Ontario was awarded the Communities in
Bloom Award for Tidiness while Summerside, Prince Edward Island was the winner
of the Youth Involvement Project Award for their 'Youth in Bloom' program to
assist at-risk youths and improve the city's green spaces. The City of
Kelowna, British Columbia was awarded 'Best Blooming Community' for achieving
the highest aggregate score in both the WinterLights Celebrations and the
Communities in Bloom programs for 2007. In the international competition,
Langley, British Columbia won in the 'Medium Population Category' with special
mention for their responsible environmental protection.
    The ten communities who were awarded top honours in their category (by
population), earning notoriety for their commitment to civic pride,
environmental responsibility and community beautification, are as follows:

    -   1 to 1,000: Tiverton, Ontario
    -   1,001 to 3,000: Millet, Alberta
    -   3,001 to 5,000: Hampton, New Brunswick
    -   5,001 to 10,000: Aylmer, Ontario
    -   10,001 to 13,000: Quesnel, British Columbia
    -   13,001 to 20,000: Pembroke, Ontario
    -   20,001 to 50,000: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
    -   50,001 to 100,000: Medicine Hat, Alberta
    -   100,001 to 300,000: Kingston, Ontario
    -   Over 300,000: Toronto, Ontario
