hmv Canada Shows Strong Sales Growth In Year To Date Figures

TORONTO, Sept. 8 /CNW/ - hmv Canada is celebrating strong growth as
reflected in the recent release of the company's sales results for the first
18 weeks of the fiscal year (April 26, 2008 - August 30, 2008). Total sales
over that period grew +7.7% versus the prior year, with comparable sales
(stores open at least 14 months) growth up +4.6% (for that same period of
"Given the present state of the Canadian economy and the general softness
in retail sales, we are quite encouraged to see that consumers are actively
embracing our evolution as a entertainment retailer. These positive sales
results are a direct reflection of various initiatives we have undertaken over
the course of the past year to evolve our brand. These initiatives include:
our recent rebranding, the recent launch of our new concept store design, the
broadening of our product offering to also encompass videogames, mp3 players,
entertainment related and pop culture books, and most recently wireless mobile
media. I'm particularly pleased to see how strongly consumers have embraced
our videogame offer, to the point where we have recently become Canada's
fastest growing videogame retailer, with videogames now accounting for over
10% of our sales," states Humphrey Kadaner, President of hmv Canada.
hmv Canada recently announced a new partnership with Bell, introducing
Bell Mobility's superior wireless products and digital content distribution
capabilities into select locations initially. In addition, the entertainment
retailer launched the new 'store of the future' concept store on Bloor Street
in Toronto this past June (with expansion of the concept occurring in a number
of stores nationally throughout the balance year), and is slated to open
another 4 new stores by year-end. hmv Canada is a proud sponsor of this year's
Toronto International Film Festival.
