HMV Canada launches 'new look' in celebration of 20th Anniversary

    TORONTO, June 11 /CNW/ - HMV Canada's 20th Anniversary celebrations
continue with a complete rebranding, to be unveiled at the launch of the new
Bloor St. "Store of the Future", on June 17, 2008. The new store concept will
be reflective of HMV Canada's revolutionary in-store experience, insuring
constant relevance to the consumer's ever-changing needs. Ongoing adaptation
to changing consumer needs continues to be the key strategy behind the
organization's growth and continued success as a pioneer in entertainment
retail (as reflected in the growth of recent sales from $300 million to over
$400 million during the past 4 years).
    "Music has been, and will always remain part of our DNA, even as we
accelerate our evolution and further develop as a full service entertainment
retailer," states Humphrey Kadaner, President of HMV Canada. "In that regard,
we are already a very substantial customer destination for the sale of movies
on DVD, and most recently we have become Canada's fastest growing videogame
retailer. As a very consumer focused brand, we are extremely committed to
evolving our organizational strategies and adapting our efforts to remain the
entertainment destination best suited to fulfill our consumers' entertainment
    The new concept store will reveal various key components that will
gradually be introduced nationwide. The rebranding is primarily defined
through new in-store segmentation: Listen, Watch, Play.
    The new brand will introduce a complete change of visuals throughout the
store, inclusive of a redesigned, more contemporary brand logo, new staff
uniforms with the new logo treatments, and cleaner sight lines throughout the
store all serving to reiterate the new-segmented store concept. New features
will also be introduced to expand the consumer interactive experience, such as
large plasma TV screens in the front windows, interactive videogaming
stations, an interactive social networking and entertainment 'Hub', and a
theatre style 'marquis' behind the cash register 'highlighting' coming
features. New products beyond music and movies, that have recently been or
will soon be introduced to HMV stores include; videogame hardware and
software, iPod media players, as well as a selection of entertainment focused
    HMV Canada continues to concentrate on the consumer as a key element of
the transition to its new in-store experience, recognizing the diversity of
individual needs from a key demographic of 14 - 24, through to the 'young at
heart.' Staffing styles will be updated to increase availability of staff to
the consumer, and encourage more proactive, informed levels of customer
service to address each individual consumer's needs. Continuing with the
evolution into a new digital age, an instore digital play list service
(branded 'channel HMV') will be introduced into the stores in the coming
month, allowing for further consumer entertainment and education in-store. In
June, digital offerings will further expand to include a Microsoft Zune media
player. This will be followed by the introduction of an entertainment media
focused mobile phone offer later this summer, with a digital music offering
expected in subsequent months.
    "With an expanded and relevant entertainment offering, we believe we can
not only maintain our current 40+ million customer visits per year, but we are
confident that we can continue to excite our customers and grow that figure to
well over 50 million customer visits/year," states Kadaner.
