National distinction awarded for sixth time to public relations/public
affairs agency, recognized for corporate culture, and commitment to
Work-life balance "promoted, not just tolerated" says one staff member
TORONTO, Oct. 9 /CNW/ - For the sixth time in seven years, Hill &
Knowlton Canada (H&K) has been named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers by
Mediacorp, and this year earned the additional distinction of the GTA Top 50
Employer's list. H&K is the only communications agency included. This annual
report ranks organizations that have created exemplary workplace environments
for employees based on key areas such as: physical workplace; work and social
atmosphere; health, financial and family benefits; performance management; as
well as training and skills development.
"Our people and our culture are what differentiate Hill & Knowlton
Canada; we hear it over and over from staff, and clients alike," said
Mike Coates, president and chief executive officer of Hill & Knowlton Canada.
"We work hard to create an engaging, fun and high performance workplace for
all our staff, and we are all proud to see the company being recognized in
In its analysis, Mediacorp highlighted H&K's commitment to ongoing career
development through performance feedback and training opportunities. The
corporate culture was also recognized for fostering opportunities for
employees to interact, and share knowledge through both formal meetings, and
the now famous "beer cart" wheeled around the office - by the most recently
joined staff - on Friday afternoons.
Andrea Craig, a senior consultant in the marketing communications
practice, was drawn to H&K's size and culture when she joined two years ago.
"Hill & Knowlton affords me the opportunity to work with a variety of
people on a wide spectrum of clients and across multiple industry sectors,"
said Craig. "This has accelerated the development of my career, along with the
company's commitment to training, such as frequent in-house lunch 'n learn
sessions, virtual academy courses on our intranet and participation in
For Craig, work-life balance is critical and was a major consideration
when she chose to join H&K. In that sense, she says, H&K is an atypical
agency. "The company has a very healthy approach to work-life balance," added
Craig. "It's promoted, not just tolerated, here. The flexibility to be able
and encouraged to work from home when needed and the willingness to
accommodate employees' schedules makes a huge difference. It's one of those
intangible but important benefits that can help working women not have to
choose career over family."
Kelly Lendvoy, vice president communications in H&K's Vancouver office,
returned to the company this past September after having started his career
with H&K back in 1989.
"When I decided to return to the spirited, creative atmosphere of agency
life, with a rounded perspective after working for several other national PR
firms, moving over to the client side and running my own consultancy, H&K was
my first choice.
"As a leader here in British Columbia and across Canada, H&K is known for
attracting a diversely talented, and uncommonly loyal, team of employees. You
often hear a staffer proudly talk about 'the H&K way.' Rather than a corporate
credo or cliché, the H&K way describes not just the way we service clients but
how the company goes the extra distance taking care of its employees. This
includes, for example, the widespread use of flexible schedules, leading edge
cross-discipline, cross-geography, practice groups that collaborate closely;
promoting from within; a powerful industry leading intranet that places
extensive databases and resources at a consultant's fingertips; the allowance
for bicycle commuters like myself for subsidized locker rentals and gym
memberships; and finally, the amount H&K spends on training and subsidized
courses and professional development."
