TORONTO, Aug. 20 /CNW/ - Friday evening's highly anticipated premiere of
High School Musical 2 on Astral Media's Family Channel drew a record 1 million
viewers, making it one of the highest-rated programs for a Canadian specialty
broadcaster in the last five years.
Compared to conventional networks, which are available in upwards of
10 million Canadian households, Family Channel is a commercial-free
subscription-based service available in 5.4 million homes. In addition to
attracting more than 1 million viewers in the P2+ demographic, High School
Musical 2 ranks as the most viewed telecast among Family's key demographic,
Kids 8-14, drawing a 47.7 share.
"Not only was the debut telecast of High School Musical 2 Family's
highest-rated telecast ever, it also achieved a milestone that is extremely
rare for specialty services in breaking the 1 million viewer mark," said Joe
Tedesco, Vice President and General Manager, Family. "Disney programming such
as High School Musical and the programs created by our own independent
Canadian producers have tapped into a formula that is winning with kids and
setting a new standard for children's entertainment."
Encore presentations of "High School Musical 2" are scheduled Sunday,
September 16 at 1:30 p.m. and Friday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT.
