Heart Institute President Applauds International Recognition of Ontario Premier's Leadership Efforts to Promote Research

    OTTAWA, May 19 /CNW Telbec/ - The University of Ottawa Heart Institute
(UOHI) applauds the choice of Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty for innovative
policies to promote research opportunities and stimulate scientific
development. The Premier was honoured Tuesday as a recipient of the 2009
International Leadership Award.
    The award was presented at the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO)
in Atllanta, GA. It celebrates the exemplary contribution by individuals
committed to advancing biotechnology and encouraging advancement in the life
    "It is important to recognize the extraordinary efforts of Premier
McGuinty to focus policy and resources on the key scientific assets of Canada
and of Ontario," said Dr. Robert Roberts, President and CEO, UOHI. "The
premier has been instrumental in creating a positive environment in Ontario
that fosters world-class research and helps us draw the best and brightest
from around the world. These are cornerstones to a prosperous future in the
    Ontario's research leadership enables medical science to remain at the
forefront of discovery. For instance, the government's March 26 provincial
budget included a $100-million fund aimed at genomics and gene-related
research, in recognition of the significant scientific, social and economic
impact of genetic research, especially in terms of heart disease.
    "With provincial support, the Heart Institute's Ruddy Canadian
Cardiovascular Genetics Centre identified the strongest genetic risk factor
for coronary artery disease and heart attack to date. The 9p21 gene is
recognized as the first major risk factor discovered since cholesterol," said
Dr. Roberts. "We salute the Premier for recognizing that great thinking leads
to great results."
