Heart and Stroke Foundation Supports Banning Smoking in Cars

TORONTO, Dec. 6 /CNW/ - The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario today
released the findings of an Ipsos-Reid poll showing the majority of smokers
and non-smokers alike believe that children should be protected from
secondhand smoke in cars.
The survey revealed that 66% of smokers and 86% of non-smokers support
legislation that bans smoking in cars when children aged 16 and under are
present. Results were announced on the heels of a new bill tabled at Queen's
Park today which proposes an amendment prohibiting smoking in cars carrying
children aged 16 and under would be enforceable under the Highway Traffic Act.
The poll was conducted on behalf of the Ontario Tobacco-free Network
which is a provincial interagency network consisting of the Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Ontario, the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division; and The
Lung Association.
"These new research findings show Ontarians are serious about protecting
their children's health," said Rocco Rossi, CEO of the Heart and Stroke
Foundation. "We ask all M.P.P.s to act on these findings and to protect
children from the effects of secondhand smoke by supporting this bill."

As a partner with the Ministry of Health Promotion in the Smoke-Free
Ontario Initiative and the Ontario Tobacco-free Network, the Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Ontario works to ensure Ontarians understand and are protected
from the deadly effects of second-hand smoke. Smoking is a major cause of
heart disease, stroke, and diseases of the vascular system. Smoking-related
cardiovascular disease is responsible more than 6,000 deaths in Ontario every

The Heart and Stroke Foundation, a volunteer-based health charity, leads
in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through the
advancement of research and its application, the promotion of healthy living
and advocacy.
