HDTV Networks set to "free" Canadian television viewers

    CRTC to decide if network will be the first free national high
    definition, over-the-air television network in Canada

    TORONTO and VANCOUVER, Dec. 13 /CNW/ - Freedom from low resolution images
may soon be one click away. Today, HDTV Networks Inc. announced that the
Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will
commence hearings to review HDTV Network's application for Canada's first free
national over-the-air high-definition (HD) broadcast licence based out of
Vancouver, British Columbia.
    "Canadians deserve the latest innovative technology in television
programming which they will be able to access from us for free," said John
Bitove, CEO of HDTV Networks Inc. "The HD format is the new generation of
broadcasting and we are keen to deliver the benefits that only HD technology
provides - vivid colour and sharp clarity - to enhance everyone's TV-watching
    HDTV Networks Inc. is poised to deliver high-definition formatted
programming to viewers in each of Canada's primary time zones with stations
proposed in: Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal
and Halifax.
    "One of the cornerstones of our application is our commitment to provide
another home for Canada's independent television production sector," said
Bitove. "In this age of increasing consolidation, we will offer a new
opportunity to air dynamic 'Made in Canada' productions, as well as new
sources of entertainment for Canadians and for export around the world."
    HDTV Networks Inc. is a Canadian-owned and operated company. The
application to establish a dedicated high-definition format network was
submitted to the CRTC on December 14, 2006 and the Canada Gazette posted today
that the hearings will take place February 11, 2008 in Gatineau, Quebec.
