HBO and Entertainment One get 'HUNG' up together

    TORONTO, Jan. 9 /CNW/ - Entertainment One (E1), a leading global
entertainment content producer and distributor, today announced that HBO has
picked up their dark comedy pilot, HUNG, starring Thomas Jane to series. The
pay cable network has ordered 10 episodes, the first of which is set to air in
June 2009.
The sale marks the first U.S. series pick-up for Entertainment One TV,
through its recently acquired television production company Blueprint
Entertainment, and the first time the company has been in the series business
with HBO. Entertainment One will act as a producer on the series, and HBO will
retain the international distribution rights.
Created by writing partners and real-life married couple Colette Burson
(writer/director of the 1999 feature Coming Soon) and Dmitry Lipkin (creator
and head writer of The Riches), HUNG stars Jane as Ray, a struggling, but
remarkably well-endowed, high school basketball coach who figures out a way to
use his best asset.
"We're thrilled that Hung has found a home at HBO," said John Morayniss,
chief executive officer of Entertainment One's Television group. "HBO helped
spark the renaissance that has pushed TV usage to an all-time high, and this
deal with them helps solidify Entertainment One's position as a real player in
TV production."
Alexander Payne (Sideways), who directed the pilot, will stay on as an
executive producer on the series, along with Lipkin, Burson and Entertainment
One TV executives Michael Rosenberg, Noreen Halpern and Morayniss.
Most of the cast and crew from the pilot will continue on the series,
including Tony Award winner Jane Adams (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless
Mind), Sianoa Smit-McPhee (Neighbours), Charlie Saxton (The Happening),
E1 Television begins 2009 with significant momentum. In addition to
"Hung", CTV recently ordered 11 one-hour episodes of E1's "The Bridge" , a new
drama series that provides an unflinching look at the struggle street cops
face as they battle criminals as well as their own bosses in an efforts to
protect society. Canwest also just commissioned a pilot for E1's "Shattered,"
a bold drama about a reclusive police officer who uses his
multiple-personality disorder to solve crimes.
