Harris Tory Party record on seniors is a disgrace: Smitherman

TORONTO, Oct. 5 /CNW/ - The Harris Tory Party record on Ontario seniors -
from cutting seniors off of home care, to eliminating the standard of even one
bath per week in long term care homes - is a disgrace, says Deputy Premier
George Smitherman.
"What the Harris Tory Party did to Ontario seniors is a disgrace," said
Smitherman. "They will never live down the disgraceful way they treated our
seniors and the mess left behind for us to clean up."

What the Harris Tory Party did to Ontario seniors:
     - Limited access to home care, leaving thousands of seniors with
        reduced or eliminated service
     - Raised long term care rates by 15%, and tried to hide over the
        Canada Day long weekend
     - Eliminated all standards for guaranteed bathing
     - Eliminated the 2.25 hours of care standard
     - Froze the comfort allowance for seniors in long term care for 8 years
     - Failed to inspect long term care homes
     - Refused to raise the daily food allowance
     - Forced seniors to pay more for drugs

Once Ontario Liberals began making improvements after years of Harris Tory
party neglect, John Tory still stood in the way:
     - Voted against enshrining 24/7 nursing care in legislation
     - Voted against enshrining minimum of two baths per week in legislation
     - Voted against $800 million (36%) increase for long term care homes
     - Voted against putting new standard of care into law
     - Voted against investments to expand home care services to 80,000 more
     - Voted against doubling the seniors property tax credit

In fact, while the Conservatives cancelled the 2.25 hours of care,
Ontario Liberals are now providing over 2.8 hours per day and 1200 more staff
are being hired this year to improve services.
"We will always be focused on improving care for Ontario seniors to
provide them with the dignity and respect they deserve," said Smitherman.
"John Tory wants to rip $3 billion out of health care and stands on a
disgraceful record of slashing seniors."
