Harper Government Supports Children in Sport

VANCOUVER, Nov. 25, 2011 /CNW/ - Today at the 2011 Vanier Cup Championship Breakfast, the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), announced funding for KidSport Canada that will provide more children with the opportunity to participate in sport.

"The Government of Canada is committed to providing all children with the chance to take part in organized sport and other physical activities," said Minister of State Gosal. "This funding will ensure that even more young Canadians have the chance to get involved in sport."

"KidSport Canada is thrilled with this announcement of funding from the Government of Canada," said Pete Quevillon, Director of KidSport British Columbia and Chair of the KidSport Canada Operations Committee. "This infusion of support will allow the national organization to provide the leadership and support to our provincial and community chapters that is critical to the continued growth of KidSport. In 2010, over 50,000 kids received KidSport support to play organized sport, and with this additional support, more kids will get the chance to realize their sporting dreams in 2011. We would like to thank the Minister for his commitment to our cause and we look forward to getting more kids into the game."

KidSport Canada is a national not-for-profit organization that provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport. KidSport Canada works directly with sport clubs and sports organizations to get children involved in a particular sport for a season, such a baseball, hockey, or ringette. Once children have been identified, KidSport Canada then helps cover registration and equipment costs to allow the child to participate for the season.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. The Government of Canada contributed $200,000 to KidSport Canada for projects in 2011-2012 through Sport Canada's Sport Support Program.
