Harper Government Supports Canadian University Sport

VANCOUVER, Nov. 25, 2011 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada's 2011-2012 contribution to Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). The announcement was made at the Vanier Cup Championship Breakfast, which is held on the morning of the 2011 CIS Football (Vanier Cup) Championship. This funding will enable CIS to effectively deliver its national championships for the year.

"Our Government's support will help CIS maintain its commitment to more than 500 coaches and 10,000 student-athletes from 52 universities that compete in university sports across Canada every year," said Minister Gosal. "University sports have a rich history in Canada, and we are happy to help maintain that legacy."

"CIS is extremely grateful to the Government of Canada for its generous support of student-athletes and Canadian universities," said Marg McGregor, Chief Executive Officer of CIS.
