Hampton Fails Forest Sector

Only McGuinty Liberals delivering real support for forest industry

THUNDER BAY, ON, Aug. 8 /CNW/ - NDP Leader Howard Hampton's negativity is
on display again today as he opposes help for Ontario's forest sector.
The McGuinty Liberals have stood behind our forestry sector with over
$1 Billion in new financial support. Our support is producing results, like
the rebirth of St. Mary's Paper yesterday in Sault Ste. Marie. Or the
investment made in Bowater today in Thunder Bay.
But, Howard Hampton failed the forest industry when he was minister, and
he is failing the forest industry in opposition.
Hampton's NDP voted against supports for forestry in our budgets. We have
invested in such supports as the Forest Sector Prosperity Fund, the Stumpage
Fee Rebate ($70 million), and the Northern Pulp and Paper Electricity
Transition Program.
This opposition builds on Hampton's past when he oversaw the closure of
14 mills in the North and the loss of countless jobs. Hampton also cancelled
funding for forest access roads. McGuinty Liberals restored that funding, now
worth $178 million.
Howard Hampton's own community has benefited from our support for the
forestry sector; $22.5 million has been invested to assist Abitibi
Consolidated in Fort Frances.
The people of Northern Ontario can see Howard Hampton and the NDP are
standing in the way of progress and they will not be fooled.
