ATLANTA, October 25 /CNW/ - According to two group practices in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the task of managing a medical group can be made easier
and more effective by implementing the right electronic health record (EHR).
Southeastern Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, a multi-location 12-physician
pediatric practice (Southeastern Peds), and MedPoint Family Care Center, a
multi-specialty group of 13 physicians (MedPoint), use MedcomSoft Record not
only to chart patient encounters, but also to automate the majority of their
front and back office operations.

"MedcomSoft Record weaves together the concepts of integrating an EHR
with a practice management tool, and includes virtually everything required to
run the practice," says Carole Sinense, office administrator for MedPoint.

MedcomSoft Record is an EHR-based clinical automation suite which
integrates a full-featured practice management system, as well as referral and
authorization management, computerized physician order entry, intra-office
workflow tools, and a number of other functions.

"Patient wait times are down, and we all seem to get more done in a day,"
continues Sinense. "Universal chart access is another element that improves
operational efficiency. The fact that an unlimited number of people can have
access to the same chart at the same time has had a tremendous impact on our
productivity. Also, I can access the system remotely, over the Internet. I
feel that I have complete control over the information, and that is a good

Martina Collins, office manager for Southeastern Peds, echoes this
positive feedback adding, "Our doctors love the system. As an EHR, Record has
won a number of certifications and awards for excellence in clinical
applications and we find that the number one benefit is having better, more
complete clinical documentation for every patient at every visit."

What is equally impressive about Record is its impact on the practice's
operational efficiency.

"Record's workflow tools also increase office productivity," explains
Collins. "We use the tasking and chat functions all day long. We'd be lost
without them now. I can instant message anyone in the practice without even
having to move from my desk. I am in instant communication with the entire

Collins also cites the benefit of improved access to information, noting,
"As a clinic manager, this is particularly important to me. I can see at a
glance all of the information, with the exception of certain protected
elements of the patient chart. This includes the entire office, billing,
scheduling, insurance, demographics, incoming communication--everything."

Both practices point to Record's billing function as another major
benefit, resulting in more accurate charge capture and an increase in
per-patient billing rates.

"While our providers are charting their encounters, they are
simultaneously building their bill," says Sinense. "Because Record is
numerically codified, employing the Medcin(R) nomenclature, there is a
one-to-one correspondence between what is captured at the point of care and
the relevant CPT and ICD-9 codes."

She says the claim scrubbing feature unto itself saved the practice,
"...tens of thousands of dollars and countless hours of staff time this year.
Record alerts billers automatically if there is a potential problem with the
codes that are matched to a particular claim. We have seen rejected claims
fall dramatically to the point that they are now negligible."

Collins concurs, adding, "Now we are billing for everything that is
charted in the encounter, and we've seen our average claim go from a level 3
to a level 4 visit. That has had a considerable impact on revenue. Our office
runs better on MedcomSoft Record that it ever had before. I'm glad our doctors
love the system, because I would hate to give it up."

According to Paul Davis, COO of MedcomSoft, "Computers speak to each
other using numerical code. By designing our EHR around a standard numerical
code, we've made codified patient data the engine on which the rest of the
practice runs. Because numerical code can be endlessly mapped to other
numerical codes, our system can automatically match any chart element in
Medcin with any other code, then query the actual CMS algorithms and generate
a precise bill that is 100 percent supported by documentation."
