Grants Help Children Connect to Families

    VICTORIA, Feb. 26 /CNW/ - Five organizations have been awarded grants
totaling $77,000 from the BC Adoption & Permanency Trust Fund. Trust Fund
Committee co-chairs Geord Holland and Sandra Scarth announced for the fifth
year in a row distribution of funds to successful applicants for a variety of
    "Only one in ten children in care in BC will find a family this year,"
said Holland. "There are over 1300 waiting children and thousands in care who
seek connections where adoption may not be a realistic option. These grants
help children and youth make permanent connections, and support many groups
which work tirelessly for these kids every day."
    The grants will be used to support an international conference on foster
parenting, research the experiences of youth to develop programs that work for
them, build local networks for youth in care and more. The grants are in
addition to fifteen mini-grants of $1500 each awarded in 2008 across the
    Established by the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development in
2003, the BC Adoption & Permanency Trust Fund supports groups which help
children and youth find and maintain lifelong connections through adoption or
alternative avenues of permanence. A total of $345,500 has been awarded from
this fund since its inception.
    Grants are awarded from the interest earned on $3 million in permanent
funds administered by the Victoria Foundation. The Adoption Council of Canada
is the secretariat to the fund. "We're pleased to be supporting this fund and
the children and youth served by the recipients of the grants," said Victoria
Foundation CEO Sandra Richardson.

    Youth of BC    As a supporting event leading up to the 2011
                   International Foster Care Conference, this
                   roundtable will increase understanding of
                   children's rights in the context of foster
                   care, and support discussion on challenges in
                   implementing child rights and on applying and
                   identifying good practices.

    Federation     Family Connections & Permanency for Youth in      $20,000
    of Youth in    Care
    Networks       Research into the experiences of youth in care
                   in remaining connected to their family, taking
                   inventory of current resources available to
                   them and identifying barriers to keeping family
                   connections. This research will culminate in a
                   roundtable of young people, foster parents and
                   decision-makers sharing information and coming
                   up with practical immediate solutions,
                   and recommendations for long-term change.

    CHOICES        Teen Adoption BC                                  $20,000
    Adoption and
    Counselling    Raising awareness and promoting permanency for
    Agency         teens in care and waiting teens in BC. This
                   project will have teens participate in creating
                   promotional materials including a "heart
                   gallery" of photographs, advertisements and a
                   website. This project will also provide
                   workshops about waiting teens.

    IFCO           International Foster Care Conference              $10,000
    2011           Planning, organizing and delivery of the 2011
    Planning       International Foster Care Conference in
    Committee      Victoria, BC. The conference will promote
                   family foster care and adoption and permanency
                   for children and youth in BC, Canada and around
                   the world.

    Federation     Building Local Networks                            $5,000
    of Youth in
    Care           Building more youth in care networks around the
    Networks       province to support having their voices heard.
                   These networks allow young people without
                   families in their lives to create connections,
                   belonging and to mutually support one another.
