Grande Portage Resources Ltd. Announces Underground Water Quality Results

BC Ministry of Energy and Mines Notice of Work to be Filed

VANCOUVER, Jan. 17 /CNW/ - Grande Portage Resources Ltd. (TSX-V GPG)
("Grande Portage" or "the Company") is pleased to announce that it has
received the final draft of the Wardrop Engineering study entitled "Merry
Widow Project Mine Water Sampling Report."
The Report confirms that mine water quality meets the BC Final Effluent
Quality Guidelines, which indicates that it will be possible to discharge the
mine water to the receiving environment without requiring treatment beyond
settling for control of suspended solids. Given this finding, Grande Portage
has directed Wardrop to develop a conceptual engineering plan for dewatering
the underground workings. This plan will determine the quantity of mine water
to be removed and the length of time necessary to initially dewater the
underground workings as well as the continued pumping rate necessary to keep
the workings dewatered during the underground exploration program. This plan,
along with the mine water quality data, will be used by Wardrop to develop the
necessary applications for regulatory approval, including a Notice of Work for
the underground exploration program.
The permitting process will involve several regulatory agencies, both
provincial and federal and the Company will continue to engage Wardrop
Engineering to make the necessary permit applications and to manage the
dewatering program. It is estimated that the permitting process will be a
minimum of 6 months. The Company will treat this permit application process
separately from the surface exploration program in order to not delay the
planned drilling programs slated for 2008.
Wardrop officials spent time inspecting the underground decline and
gathered numerous water samples. Samples related to the Old Sport Horizon
include 2 samples from the underground workings, 1 sample from the 5549 adit,
and 2 samples from the Benson River; upstream and downstream of the mine
workings. Additional samples from the area include 1 from the Merry Widow open
pit, 1 from the Kingfisher pit, 1 and 1 from a creek that transects the
Bluebird 1 and Bluebird 2 zones. The samples were tested for acidity and
suspended metals content as preliminary steps towards the Company's goal of
obtaining a permit to dewater the underground workings and evaluate both the
existing resource and to explore for strike extensions of the Old Sport
Horizon. The samples from outside the underground workings will form part of
the overall baseline environmental studies.
Grande Portage has been exploring the Merry Widow project under the
premise that there exists significant remaining tonnage at the old open pits
peripheral to the magnetite zones and in the Old Sport Horizon either along
strike extensions or within the old workings. Substantial amounts of
mineralized skarn material remain untested.
Wesley Raven, P. Geo., is the qualified person for this project and has
