Grand Erie Teacher Elected To The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario Executive

    TORONTO, Aug. 15 /CNW/ - Susan Swackhammer, a teacher with the Grand Erie
District School Board and president of the Grand Erie ETFO Teacher Local, was
elected to the executive of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario
(ETFO) at the federation's annual meeting in Toronto today.
    "The appropriate balance of power and autonomy in our organization must
be found," Swackhammer told the more than 500 meeting delegates. "The
collective voice of 70,000 members is our strength. Effective leaders will
recognize and value the richness and diversity that exists among these voices.
I am a leader who believes in the power of the collective and am not
threatened by different ideas and opinions," she said.
    "I am ready for the challenges of the next round of bargaining. The gap
in funding between elementary and secondary students cannot continue," she
    Swackhammer has taught all grades from Kindergarten to grade 8. She
served as president of the Grand Erie Teacher Local of the Federation of Women
Teachers Associations of Ontario (FWTAO) from 1991-1995. By 1995 she was
serving on the FWTAO provincial executive. She was one of the founding
executive members of ETFO and served as its first vice president from
