Got your brass, strings 'n' tings? Application phase open for Red Bull Music Academy 2008

Last year it was Toronto, this year the Academy touches down in Barcelona
and the search is on for the next wave of emerging sound makers from
across Canada and around the world

TORONTO, March 25 /CNW/ - In 1998 the Red Bull Music Academy was created
as a platform for those who shape our musical future. Since then, many
pioneers of today's sounds have spoken at its various editions held around the
globe. They shared their knowledge, experience, and inspiration, highlighting
those links between genres and generations that make music so precious.
Over this tune-filled decade, the Academy has seen more than 450 guest
lecturers like Peter Hook of New Order, Just Blaze (producer for hip hop
heavyweights like Jay-Z and Kanye West), the Mizell Brothers (creators of
jazz-fusion and hit-writers for the Jackson 5), Bernard Purdie (the drummer
who provided beats for everybody from the Beatles to Aretha Franklin and Dizzy
Gillespie), as well as Canadian artists such as A-trak, Caribou and Tiga. Many
of our 600 Academy alumni have gone on to contribute to their local music
scenes, write albums, collaborate with the very people whose lectures they
heard at the Academy, and start their own labels. There's a way to be part of
this continuum. Once in the year, the world's most passionate musicians have a
chance to apply, to show their music's greater potential and join the hundreds
of music makers who've passed through the Academy's doors. It's that time now.

The Red Bull Music Academy in a nutshell

The Red Bull Music Academy travels to a new spot on the globe yearly and
sets up a campus equipped with anything anyone would need to take music into
new realms. In the last decade, we've visited Cape Town, Berlin, Melbourne and
Toronto, bringing a new group of sixty music lovers along for the ride each
time. The Academy is an environment where like-minded peers benefit from the
wisdom of well-established producers, DJs, musicians, composers, arrangers and
engineers. Studio tips and the secret stories behind the tunes are shared via
informal lectures and lab lessons. No, they're not graded. Experience is the
best teacher, and everyone finds they have something different to learn or to
bring to the table.

How to apply for the Red Bull Music Academy

Anyone interested in joining this year's Academy in Barcelona must follow
a few simple steps. Prospective applicants should pick up an application CDR
from their local vinyl emporium or download the application form at They should then send the completed questionnaire
along with a mix-CD or selection of his/her own music to the Red Bull Music
Academy between March 14 and May 5, 2008.

When and Where the Academy will happen this year

Successful applicants will be invited to participate in one of two terms:
September 21 - October 03, 2008 or October 12 - October 24, 2008. This year,
we're visiting one of the most beloved creative metropolises - Barcelona. It's
a place where the terms 'fusion' and 'avant-garde' are not buzz words but
techniques to be applied to everything from deconstructed orchestras to art
installations on street corners. Renowned and beautiful art museums add
dramatic, sculpted public spaces to the area known as Raval, where vivid
graffiti cartoons and new release records can both be discovered down little
back streets. The city's world-class clubs see styles experimental
electronica, techno, indie rock and rap scenes have no issues crossing each
other's borders. Barcelona is a creative mecca, where natives of other
countries come to ply their trade. Amongst the top European hubs as such, this
is the only one where the musically inclined who gather there, can dip their
toes both in new projects and more literally, at the beach. Barcelona is a
city to be celebrated.

    Workshop Term 1: September 21 - October 03, 2008
