TORONTO, Sept. 20, 2007 /CNW/ - GO Transit, an enthusiastic supporter of
environmental initiatives, is even more green today as it sponsors Toronto Car
Free Day. Local versions of this event are celebrated worldwide by millions of
people in over 30 countries.
Today, Yonge St. will be car-free between Dundas St. and Shuter St. from
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The street will be a venue for bike stunt shows, bands,
dancers, and local celebrities. Health and environmental displays will also be
set up at Young-Dundas Square to answer environmental questions and to
showcase green options.
Drop by the GO Transit booth to find out more about green transportation
options and to receive a complimentary biodegradable wildflower seed card that
you can plant in your garden and watch grow.
On a typical weekday, over 40,000 cars are left in GO parking lots

travel means such as walking or taking public transit to their station. Many
carpool lots are available along GO's bus network spanning the Greater Toronto
GO promotes public transit as a key to maintaining healthy cities for
years to come. "GO encourages its customers to take local public transit if
possible to GO stations, and this is made more attractive through fare
integration agreements that offer discounts to GO customers travelling to
train stations on local transit systems," said GO Chairman Peter Smith.
One GO Bus can seat 57 passengers, one 10-car GO Train can seat 1,600
passengers, and starting in early 2008, new double-deck GO Buses will seat 78
passengers each. By parking this many cars each day and taking GO, riders are
helping to reduce harmful emissions, overall fuel consumption, and traffic
