Globalstar Signs Contract With Alcatel Alenia Space to Upgrade Satellite Operations and Control Center

    Agreement assures Globalstar capability to monitor and control
    second-generation satellite constellation and provide mission operations
    support for satellites until at least 2025

    MILPITAS, Calif., April 3 /CNW/ -- Globalstar, Inc. (Nasdaq:   GSAT), a
leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses,
governments, and individuals, announced today that it has signed a EUR 9
million (approximately US$12 million) agreement with Alcatel Alenia Space to
upgrade the Globalstar satellite operations and control center located in
Milpitas, CA and its backup satellite ground control facility located in El
Dorado Hills, CA. According to the agreement Alcatel Alenia Space will provide
the necessary hardware and software upgrades to Globalstar's satellite control
network facilities, which are required to support the 15-year mission duration
of the Globalstar second-generation satellite constellation. The
second-generation low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, also being
designed and manufactured by Alcatel Alenia Space, is expected to provide
Globalstar customers with satellite voice and data services until at least

to monitor and control a mixed constellation of first and second generation
satellites as early as 2009."
    The Globalstar Satellite Operations and Control Center (SOCC) upgrades
will be developed using Alcatel Alenia Space's COTS product called SCC/Open,
with customizations that are specific to the Globalstar mission. Alcatel
Alenia Space will also upgrade the satellite service provider's Telemetry and
Command Units (TCU) and In Orbit Test (IOT) hardware and software located at
the various Globalstar gateway ground stations around the world. Combined with
the SOCC improvements, these upgrades will provide Globalstar with the
capability to administer second-generation satellite constellation mission
operations support and control with minimal staffing and maximum task
