Global Egg Corporation fined $50,000 for a health and safety violation

    TORONTO, Feb. 21 /CNW/ - Global Egg Corporation, a Toronto-based company
which produces liquid and frozen pasteurized egg products for the commercial,
industrial and food service markets, was fined $50,000 today for a violation
of the Occupational Health and Safety Act that resulted in scalp injuries to a
On January 11, 2007, the worker was under an Egg Sonovo loading machine
setting up the drip sanitizer tray while the machine was running. The
machine's drive shaft was covered by an "L" shaped metal cover, which was not
bolted in place or interlocked to the machine motion. The cover fell to the
floor when the worker knocked it. The worker's hairnet and hair became
entangled in the rotating shaft, causing scalp injuries. A Ministry of Labour
investigation found that the rotating shaft was inadequately guarded and there
was access to moving and rotating parts.
Global Egg Corporation pleaded guilty to failing, as an employer, to
ensure that the measures and procedures prescribed by section 24 of
Regulation 851 were carried out, contrary to section 25(1)(c) of the
Occupational Health and Safety Act.
A fine of $50,000 was imposed by Justice of the Peace Esme Lall. In
addition to the fine, the court imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge on
the total, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is
credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
