    BOCHUM, Germany, Feb. 3 /CNW Telbec/ - The Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Region
in the west of Germany in the heart of continental Europe is considered the
globe's most important economic urban hub. About 10 million people live in an
area of 30 x 50 kilometres. Cities closely bordering each other make it the
perfect environment for a dense and highly effective economic network paired
with optimal conditions for foreign investors.
The Ruhr Metropolis is an economic driver for the state, with 18 percent
of Germany's exported goods "Made in North Rhine-Westphalia". Together with an
export volume of 174 billion euros, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW)
ranks 18th in exports worldwide, on a level comparable to Spain or Taiwan.

International program to secure long-term job sustainability in the
    Bochum Region.

The city of Bochum is the central economic hub in the Ruhr Metropolis and
is geographically positioned to benefit greatly from the economic power of
North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition, the "Growth for Bochum" program was
launched last year jointly by Finnish enterprise Nokia in cooperation with the
State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the City of Bochum. The initiative was
created by Nokia and the government of NRW after Nokia shut down production at
its Bochum site. The company is committed to provide targeted assistance for
Bochum and the surrounding region and to support sustainable, long-term
economic development in the region. More than 40 million euros worth of
funding have been made available with additional resources potentially

Targeting specific needs: Excellent opportunities for Canadian businesses
in health care, IT-security, and engineering.

The centerpiece of the "Growth for Bochum" program targets Canadian
companies active in the key sectors of IT-security, health care, or
engineering. In addition to the benefits provided by the Bochum Region's
location, the "Growth for Bochum" program's international team offers
individually tailored support for foreign investors.
"By providing them with a comprehensive starter package, we wish to make
it easier for Canadian companies to set up business here," explains Christa
Thoben, the Minister of Economics for North-Rhine Westphalia. "With specific
information on markets and expert advice regarding opportunities for financing
and subsidies, by facilitating access to regional networks and offering
detailed real estate consulting services, our goal is to create optimal
conditions for investors looking to enter the German market by locating in the
Bochum Region."

    The Region Ruhr / Bochum

The Ruhr Metropolis has one of the most highly developed transportation
infrastructures in Europe: 598 km of Autobahn, 70 railway stations, 5 switch
yards, 272 km of waterways, the world's largest inland port in Duisburg, the
Dortmund airport as well as the nearby Dusseldorf and Cologne airports - these
all guarantee optimal connections to every desired destination. On its path
towards expanding into a hub for the service and high-tech industries,
important centers of expertise have developed in the health care, energy,
IT-security, and engineering sectors.
Over 15,000 companies already benefit from Bochum's unique location - at
the center of the Ruhr Metropolitan Area. This advantage is reflected in the
high proportion of the manufacturing industry's production going to export.
The export ratio lies at over 50 percent. With approximately 40,000 students,
Bochum's Ruhr University and four technical colleges can provide highly
qualified entry-level employees or experienced, well-trained managerial staff.
