VANCOUVER, April 27 /CNW/ - According to Statistics Canada, almost 75% of household internet users aren't paying attention to their internet privacy and security. This, coupled with the recent security breach at PlayStation Network has left hundreds of thousands of consumers vulnerable.

With so much personal information easily exposed online, Geek Squad is responding to consumers' fears that gaming or surfing online is no longer secure.

Geek Squad Mission Specialist Henry Truong says there's still some good news:

"If you think your personal online information has been compromised in a hack attack, don't panic. There are a few steps you can take to reduce your risks. You can also avoid becoming a victim again by properly setting up your home network and using a few Geek Squad online security best practices."

Here are some Geek Squad tips to stay safe online whenever using personal information:

1. Start using pre-paid cards.
Several major online video game and service providers allow you to purchase pre-paid credit for use on their services so you do not have to register a credit card with your online account. For example, Best Buy carries PlayStation Network cards, Xbox Live Points cards, Apple iTunes Cards and many others in-store. Consumers can purchase cards at any local Best Buy without ever having to expose your credit card information online.
2. Alternatively, make sure to use only one credit card when posting your information online.
If you have to use your credit card for online services or purchases try to keep them all to one card. This way, if something does happen and your account information is stolen you will have limited your possible damages. It is also easier to report one compromised card than multiple cards.
3. Make sure you're on a password protected and encrypted network.
This is important! Wireless technologies are great but if you are not using a secure network anything you are doing can potentially be seen by others within your network area. Ensuring you have a password protected and encrypted network will greatly reduce the risk that others will have unauthorized access to your data.
4. Get some Anti-virus and anti-spyware software
Not sure what to get, give us a call, we can help. Ensure your personal computer is protected as well. A secured network will ensure people don't access your data from outside but does not protect you if you accidently download a virus. Strong anti-virus and anti-spyware software will help prevent most viruses from affecting your computer and possibly copying your information.
5. Never use the same password and login for multiple websites and services
If even one of your accounts is compromised all your accounts will have been compromised as well.

Best Buy's Geek Squad also offers these services to maximize security:

Connected Home Service
A Geek Squad Agent will connect up to 5 devices to your network to ensure maximum connectivity and security. A Geek Squad Agent can setup your router with a secured password and encryption. This service also includes connecting your network enabled home theatre components such as video game consoles, media streamers, and other network enabled devices such as SMART TV's.

Advanced Diagnostic and Repair
If you suspect your computer has been infected with a virus or other malicious software we can help repair the damage. A Geek Squad Agent will check the computer for both hardware and software problems and then repair any software or virus related issues, afterward they will tune up the computer to ensure it's running better than before.

Geek Squad Online Support
Geek Squad offers an Online Support service where you can connect online and receive a free quick check-up on your computer and also chat with a real live Geek Squad Agent. There are multiple options when service is required. Customers can purchase the service on-line and an Agent will perform the service or they can book a service to have an Agent come to your home at a later date. They can even pack their computer up and bring it in to their local Geek Squad Precinct located in all Best Buy stores to have their computer serviced.
