From Hogtown to El Toro: introducing Toronto's spicy new nickname!

EYE WEEKLY reveals the winner of its Give Toronto a New Nickname Contest-chosen by a panel of local celebrity judges

TORONTO, Feb. 23 /CNW/ - You can put Hogtown back in the pen. Return T.O. to your alphabet soup. Store the T-Dot wherever it is you keep your MC Hammer pants. Toronto has a new nickname. Welcome to El Toro.

Congratulations to EYE WEEKLY reader Tim Sproll for submitting the winning entry to EYE WEEKLY's nickname contest. Over 500 readers proposed new monikers, ranging from the openly dismissive (The Big Envy) to the exalted (Dreamopolis). But El Toro was the clear winner among the magazine's panel of celebrity judges—including comedian Russell Peters, Metric lead singer Emily Haines, CFRB host John Tory and Raptors power forward Amir Johnson—for its "mystique," its "delightfully multicultural tinge" and its indication that Toronto is "an aggressive player in North American and beyond."

To wit: El Toro plays off the first four letters of the city's name, and it's reminiscent of The Toros, our former Western Hockey League team. Other notable contenders included: T-Bone, DiverCity, The Big Maple, The Rocket, Pronto and Skytown.

For more details on contest statistics and results, see the Feb. 24, 2011 issue of EYE WEEKLY, available now. Also: look closely for appearances of "El Toro" throughout the magazine.

EYE WEEKLY ( is Toronto's ultimate weekly urban lifestyle and entertainment magazine.
