TORONTO, Sept. 16, 2011 /CNW/ - Fiskars Canada is voluntarily notifying
consumers of a retrofit program for the Gerber® Gator® Combo Axe, model
number 22-49470 as a precautionary measure due to the following safety
If the user is hammering or chopping with the axe prior to removing the
knife from the handle; the force in which the axe hits can cause the
knife to come out of the handle and stick upright, and on the next down
stroke the knife can pose a laceration hazard to the user.
No reported incidents or injuries have resulted in Canada. This Retrofit
is a voluntary and precautionary measure by Fiskars.
Consumers who have a Combo Axe should always remove the knife from the
axe handle before using the axe, and contact Gerber immediately to receive their free Handle Cap,
instructions for installing the Handle Cap, and a warning sticker. Once installed on the axe, the Handle Cap will keep the knife securely
in the axe handle during transport and storage.
Combo Axes sold by Gerber since March 2011 have the Handle Cap already
installed. If you purchased a Combo Axe with a Handle Cap, there is no
need for you to contact Gerber, but you should still always remove the
knife from the axe handle before using the axe.
Note that the Gerber Combo Axe II, Model Number 22-41420, which combines
a longer axe with a saw in its handle, is not involved in this
