First Five Wal-Mart Supercentres Set to Grand Open in Alberta

Supercentres feature fresh groceries with enhanced fashion, home and
    electronics departments

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 10 /CNW/ - Building upon the success of its first
eight Supercentres in Ontario, Wal-Mart Canada today announced it will
celebrate the grand opening of five new Wal-Mart Supercentres across Alberta
on Sept. 19. The Wal-Mart Supercentres, located in Wainwright, Vegreville,
Lethbridge, Pincher Creek and West Edmonton, are Wal-Mart's response to
Albertan's growing demand for selection, value and time-saving solutions for
the busy Canadian consumer. By month's end, 17 Wal-Mart Supercentres across
Canada will offer fresh groceries with enhanced fashion, home and electronics
Ranging in size from 101,000 square feet to 205,000 square feet, Wal-Mart
Supercentres represent an average increase in size of approximately
30 per cent over existing Canadian Wal-Mart discount stores. Wal-Mart
Supercentres offer a full line of groceries, and enhanced key departments -
like fashion, home trends and electronics - to broaden customer selection,
including a wider range from opening-price-point items to higher-end
merchandise. Each Wal-Mart Supercentre stocks approximately 120,000 products,
compared to 80,000 in a traditional store. This represents the largest retail
selection under one roof for Canadian customers.
"Since opening Canada's first Wal-Mart Supercentre almost a year ago,
we've been overwhelmed by our customers' positive response," said Mario
Pilozzi, President and CEO of Wal-Mart Canada. "Supercentres are designed
inch-by-inch with the Canadian consumer in mind. We have enhanced all the
areas our customers told us we should and introduced a full line of groceries,
fresh produce and meats. The result is the real one-stop shop that Canadians
have been waiting for, combining enhanced fashion, home trends, electronics,
and a full fresh market."
The most anticipated change Wal-Mart Supercentres bring to the Canadian
retail industry is Wal-Mart's move into fresh groceries. With nearly
40,000 square feet of dry groceries enhanced with fresh produce, meats,
cheeses, deli items, bakery goods, dairy and frozen foods, Wal-Mart
Supercentres combine Wal-Mart's traditional general merchandise with a full
offering of groceries. Additionally, service areas throughout Wal-Mart
Supercentres, such as the one-hour photo lab, vision centre, pharmacy and Tire
& Lube Express, give customers the convenience of crossing off many things on
their "to-do" list all under one roof.
In the grocery area the Your Fresh Market concept, exclusive to Wal-Mart
Canada Supercentres, represents quality, freshness and value. The concept
includes ready-to-eat goods like artisan breads, birthday cakes, croissants,
salads, lasagna, ribs, fruit and deli trays and rotisserie chicken - all
prepared onsite.
To fulfill its goal of building "stores of the community," and appealing
to varying customer preferences and tastes, Wal-Mart Supercentres will stock a
comprehensive mix of traditional groceries, as well as organic and ethnic
food. Wal-Mart Supercentres offer an expansive selection of organic foods
including: organic fresh produce, dairy, meats, frozen and snack foods like
pizza, bread, chips, salty snacks, baby foods, chocolate bars, cereal and
Wal-Mart Supercentres in Alberta and across Canada will feature
Canadian-produced beef, veal, chicken and pork. Additionally, Alberta's
Wal-Mart Supercentres will feature Paradise Valley free-range pork and Diamond
Willow certified-organic beef, produced locally in Wainwright and Pincher
Creek respectively. Each Wal-Mart Supercentre will sell more that 25,000
pounds of seasonally fresh, Canadian-grown produce next year.
In addition to a full line of groceries, Wal-Mart Supercentres will offer
a greater selection of modern and trendy items - primarily in fashion,
electronics and home - normally associated with specialty big-box retailers.
Wal-Mart Supercentre will feature a richer assortment of the latest trends in
colours, design, technology and must-have items to help Canadian customers
stretch their dollars even further.
"Despite the strong economy, Albertans still expect great selection at
great prices when they visit our stores," said Pilozzi. "With Wal-Mart
Supercentres, selection and value are taken to a new level, with modern
electronics, stylish clothes, trendy home fashions and the addition of fresh
foods, at our everyday low prices."
Wal-Mart Canada will continue the expansion of its new supercentre format
with a total of 28 Wal-Mart Supercentres across Canada by early 2008.
A new Wal-Mart Supercentre creates approximately $20 million in
investment, 200 trade and construction jobs, and as many as 500 jobs for
in-store associates.
