- Canadian kids squeeze their hearts out and take a stand for their
favourite charities -
SHERMAN OAKS, CA, June 21 /CNW/ - Summer is a delicious time of year with
so many fruits in bloom. Now, Canadians can experience an even tastier season
with a meaningful twist as a massive crop of lemonade stands will sprout up
across the country throughout the summer as part of the "Take a Stand(R)"
program. The first day of summer officially kicks off this unique program
created by Sunkist Growers to encourage kids to give back to their community
by raising money for a charity of their choice through a good old-fashioned,
freshly-squeezed lemonade sale.
"Take a Stand" has empowered thousands of Canadian kids aged 7 to 12
years old, giving them an opportunity to learn to cultivate an entrepreneurial
spirit and help them make a positive contribution to the community.
Encouraging future philanthropists and entrepreneurs, Sunkist's "Take a Stand"
program squeezes some fun into summer by giving kids an outlet to get involved
in a cause that is important to them and providing the tools to support a
charity of their choice. This year alone, more than 10,000 requests have
poured in from kids throughout Canada and the United States. Due to
overwhelming demand, Sunkist has further announced that an additional 5,000
stands will be made available in celebration of the first weekend of summer on
a first come first served basis so that even more kids can join the fun.
"Never underestimate the power of our kids wanting to give back. This
year Sunkist received pledges from kids in Canada wanting to raise money for
local charities and national causes such as Sick Kids Foundation, Canadian Red
Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, Right to Play,
Second Harvest and many others," said Billy Dean, GRAMMY(R) award winning
country star and 'Take a Stand' spokesperson. "Throughout the summer,
Canadians should keep their eyes open for 'Take a Stand' lemonade stands in
their communities and ensure that they stop by and support the efforts of the
kids as they squeeze their hearts out!"
Since its inception four years ago, it is estimated that more than
$1.5 million was raised for charities by kids in North America, one glass of
Sunkist lemonade at a time.
Kids across Canada who want to participate in 'Take a Stand' can download
free lemonade stand tools, including: "Lemonade for Sale" poster, sales
tracker, stand price sign and a worksheet on how to price their product from
the Sunkist website (www.sunkist.com/takeastand/).
As one of the world's oldest and largest citrus marketing cooperatives,
Sunkist Growers is owned by more than 6,000 citrus growers in California and
Arizona, most of whom are family farmers, with approximately 2,000 of those
growers producing lemons. For more information about Sunkist, visit
