OTTAWA, Aug. 20 /CNW Telbec/ - Minister Baird joined delegates from the
Association of Canadian Municipalities Conference this week to tour the
PlascoEnergy Group Inc. (PlascoEnergy) demonstration facility in Ottawa. The
Minister got to see first hand the innovative facility currently being brought
into operation. Tomorrow the Minister will accompany the Mexican Secretary of
the Environment, who is in town for the Security and Prosperity Partnership
meeting in Montebello.
"Our Government is excited to see such innovative technology being
fostered here in Canada and I am very excited to have the opportunity to show
this to my Mexican counterpart, Secretary Elvira tomorrow," said Mr. Baird.
"There is currently a massive opportunity for Canada to be a leader in the
fast growing green technology sector, and it's the kind of homegrown ingenuity
that PlascoEnergy has demonstrated that will get us there."
The demonstration facility converts un-recyclable solid waste into
valuable products including clean synthetic gas or "syngas" to operate engines
for electricity production. More than 99% of the waste is converted, and less
than two kilograms remain for disposal from each tonne of waste processed at
the facility. There are no emissions from the conversion process. The engines
that produce electricity operate on the clean syngas and the exhaust is clean
and continuously monitored.
"I am thrilled at the response we have gotten so far," said PlascoEnergy
CEO Rod Bryden. "While the plant is fully constructed, it will go into full
operation this fall. But that hasn't seemed to suppress the level of interest
we are receiving here in Ontario, across the country and from all over the
world. It is a great pleasure to have the Minister of the Environment here
showing such great interest and support. The fact that he has decided to
personally invite and host the Mexican Secretary Elivira here tomorrow is a
real demonstration of pride in Canadian business and innovation, and we
couldn't be more pleased."
The demonstration project, in partnership with the City of Ottawa, has
received $7.2 million in contributions of a total commitment of $9.5 million
from Sustainable Development Technology Canada. The project has also received
a $4 million loan from the provincial Ministry of Research and Innovation.
