FCM welcomes Stéphane Dion's commitment to partnership with cities and communities - Municipal leaders look forward to discussion of specific measures

QUEBEC CITY, June 1 /CNW Telbec/ - The following statement was released
today by Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM)' President, Councillor
Gord Steeves following the speech to FCM delegates by Stéphane Dion, Leader of
the Official Opposition.
"FCM delegates welcomed Mr. Dion today and responded warmly to his
expression of support for municipal governments and his promise to work in
partnership with us. This was perhaps the strongest statement ever by a
federal leader recognizing not only the needs and challenges faced by
municipal governments but also the central role that they can and must play in
addressing a host of national challenges.
Mr. Dion referred to a recent report from his Urban Caucus. The report
identifies a number of specific measures designed to address many of the
challenges faced by cities and communities and give content to the
intergovernmental partnership Mr. Dion referred to.
Mr. Dion reiterated his party's commitment to investing a large portion
of the federal surplus in our country's infrastructure. This is an important
commitment. He also stressed the importance of working with cities and
communities to fight reduce greenhouse emissions. FCM has always argued that
cities and communities were essential partners in the fight against climate
change-Mr. Dion understands this.
We look forward to discussing the specific measures Mr. Dion intends to
put into place were his party to lead the country.
FCM looks forward to working with Mr. Dion and all Members of Parliament
to ensure Canada moves forward, propelled by dynamic municipal governments and
vibrant communities."
