Family Channel to hold rallies in schools that stand up against bullying during the 5th annual national Bullying Awareness Week, November 19 to 25, 2007

Nominations open from September 21 to October 19 at

    TORONTO, Oct. 2 /CNW/ - From September 21 to October 19 at,
kids across Canada will have the chance to nominate their schools for one of
four Bullying Awareness Week rallies. Selected schools will be awarded "stand
UP!" rallies presented by Family Channel in association with PREVNet
(Promoting Relationships and Eliminating Violence), a national network of
Canadian researchers, community organizations and governments committed to
ending bullying ( Celebrating the schools' bullying prevention
efforts, the rallies will take place during the 5th annual national Bullying
Awareness Week, November 19 to 25, 2007.
Organized around the rallying cry "stand UP!" - a message that promotes
the role that bystanders can play in stopping bullying - the rallies offer
students an exciting and unforgettable "behind-the-scenes" entertainment
experience. Stars from such series as Life With Derek and Zoey 101 will
co-host each rally, sharing their own personal experiences with bullying and
participating with students in a series of fun activities including a "stand
UP" video shout out. PREVNet representatives will also be in attendance to
lead a discussion with students on the issue of bullying.
Each November since the launch of Bullying Awareness Week in 2003, Family
Channel has spread the "stand UP!" message, which is based on research
conducted by Drs. Debra Pepler and Wendy Craig, Scientific Co-Directors of
PREVNet. The research indicates that one of the largest opportunities to
reduce bullying is for bystanders to stand up for peers who are bullied.
Campaign elements that have been led by Family Channel have included Public
Service Announcements, bullying-themed programming, an online "I won't stand
by, I will stand up" pledge, SMS tips, a teacher's guide and a retail
fundraising campaign in partnership with La Senza Girl.
The "stand UP!" rally component is entering its second year. In its first
year, over 10,000 kids took the initiative to nominate their schools and
rallies were awarded to schools in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Victoria. This year,
in addition to the "stand UP!" rallies, Family Channel is once again planning
to produce in partnership with the producers of Life With Derek, Shaftesbury
Films, a new public service announcement, continue its fundraising efforts
with La Senza Girl, and offer stand UP! programming and content on air and
