Family Channel Kicks Off Bullying Awareness Week November 17, 2008,
with On-Air, Online, In-Store and In-School Campaign that Encourages Kids
to Stand UP!
TORONTO, Nov. 13 /CNW/ - Astral Media's Family Channel is once again
encouraging kids to stand UP! to bullying with the launch of Bullying
Awareness Week on November 17. Now in its sixth year, Family's 2008 campaign
for bullying prevention is anchored by an original "stand UP!" song and music
video, performed by Vanessa Morgan from the hit television series The Latest
Buzz; surprise rallies held in schools across Canada featuring stars from The
Latest Buzz; a week-long programming lineup devoted to the issue of bullying;
a dedicated mini-site with resources for kids, parents, and teachers; and the
sale of stand Up! fashion cuffs to raise funds for the bullying prevention
"For this year's Bullying Awareness Week, Family Channel has worked
closely with our partners at PREVNet and DECODE Entertainment to create a
positive and fun campaign, which stresses that everyone can play a role in
standing up to bullying," said Joe Tedesco, Vice President and General
Manager, Family Channel. "As we continue to drive this stand UP! message
on-air, online and in schools, we are buoyed and inspired to hear from kids
who are finding solutions in their own lives to deal with bullying and to see
first-hand the commitment that teachers, parents and kids have to stopping
bullying and promoting positive relationships."
Family Channel's initiatives during Bullying Awareness Week include:
stand UP! Song
This year's campaign features a "stand UP!" song, performed by Vanessa
Morgan who stars as Amanda in the popular Family Channel series The Latest
Buzz. Commissioned by Family Channel and produced by DECODE Entertainment, the
song and accompanying music video spread the stand UP! message that Family's
Bullying Awareness Week has reinforced since its inception in 2003, and
features the cast members from The Latest Buzz. The "stand UP!" song is
available now on-air on Family Channel, on demand at Family OnDemand and
online at Family.ca.
stand UP! Rallies
Hundreds of kids across Canada nominated their schools for one of three
Bullying Awareness Week rallies by submitting their own original songs, song
lyrics or essays detailing how they stand UP! to bullying. Family Channel has
selected winning submissions and will travel to three schools to offer
students an exciting and unforgettable "behind-the-scenes" entertainment
experience with stars from The Latest Buzz who will share their own personal
stories and participate with students in a series of fun activities.
stand UP! Programming
Throughout Bullying Awareness Week, Family Channel also presents special
programming that deals with the issue of bullying, including the broadcast
premiere of The Latest Buzz: The Peer Pressure Issue on Friday, November 21 at
6:30 p.m. ET/PT. In this episode, Amanda's old friend visits the school and
bullies other kids - something the whole Buzz gang has to contend with.
Additional bullying prevention themed episodes of Family Channel shows will
air throughout the week during regular timeslots. Programs include Life With
Derek, Hannah Montana, Cory in the House, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,
That's So Raven, Zoey 101 and popular films including Minutemen, Camp Rock,
Going to the Mat and One Small Hero.
stand UP! Mini-site
Family.ca has developed a "stand UP!" mini-site that contains valuable
tips on bullying prevention for kids, parents and teachers, all developed in
partnership with PREVNet. The campaign website also features engaging material
including video and audio versions of the stand UP! song; video podcasts of
cast members from The Latest Buzz sharing their personal experiences with
bullying; and a selection of some of the outstanding original submissions sent
in from kids from across Canada.
stand UP! Cuff
A teal-coloured bracelet/key chain stamped with the silver stand UP!
message is available now both on www.family.ca and in La Senza Girl stores
across Canada. A portion of the proceeds from all sales goes to support

this year's stand UP! campaign in association with PREVNet (Promoting
Relationships and Eliminating Violence), a national network of Canadian
researchers, community organizations and governments committed to ending
bullying (www.prevnet.ca). Campaign elements including the original stand UP!
song and music video, were created in partnership with DECODE Entertainment,
