Fact Check: John Tory gets it wrong on coal... again

TORONTO, Sept. 13 /CNW/ - John Tory got it wrong on coal... again.

Tory Myth: Today in a press release Tory said that scrubbers are "proven
to reduce sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury emissions by
approximately 90%".

Fact: The Ontario Power Authority's detailed calculations on pollution
reduction show that even the most expensive scrubbers on Nanticoke will only
reduce sulphur dioxide by 34%, nitrogen oxide by 23% and mercury by 24%. (OPA
Emission Control Alternatives for Ontario Coal Generators, April 2007,
page 7.)

Tory Myth: John Tory also stated that: "(Our plan) will reduce smog and
give us and our children cleaner air. And it will allow us to move as quickly
as possible to meet our greenhouse gas reduction targets."

FACT: Scrubbers do nothing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Let's look at the facts on getting rid of coal and cleaning up our air:

Reliance on coal down by 1/3 Reliance on coal up by 127%
    CO2 emissions down 29% CO2 emission up 124%
    SO2 emissions down 44% SO2 emissions up 114%
NOx emissions down 46% NOx emissions up 22%
Wind Turbines going up to 700 Wind turbines stalled at 10
Closed Lakeview coal plant Never closed a single coal plant
