Evergreen Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Earth Day events across Canada

TORONTO, April 19 /CNW/ - In 1991, before the notion of nature-deficit disorder became mainstream, three university students established Evergreen, an organization aimed at connecting city dwellers with nature.

"We had some big ideas 20 years ago, and they quickly gained momentum as the wider community embraced our efforts," says Geoff Cape, Evergreen's executive director. "Thanks to the energy, passion and dedication of our partners, donors, supporters, volunteers and staff, here we still are—bringing nature to schools, communities and homes throughout Canada."

With support from our lead national partner Fido, the wireless company that cares, Evergreen will celebrate its 20th Anniversary with a series of Earth Day activities across Canada. The events will provide more ways for Canadians to embrace nature throughout the country—including nature tours, tree planting and hands-on restoration efforts.

Twenty years is a long time, but even more impressive are the accomplishments made in those years:

  • $5.8-million - Grants provided by Evergreen to naturalize more than 3,600 schools, parks and public spaces across Canada
  • 1,000,000 - Amount of students from more than 3,000 schools that have been involved in a planting or school ground greening initiative.
  • 190,000 - Number of people who have participated in over 2,500 community greening events and workshops organized by Evergreen nationwide.

With multiple events planned throughout the country, we invite you to get involved in your community and join us in celebrating 20 years of making cities more livable!

About Evergreen
Evergreen is a national not-for-profit organization that makes cities more livable. By deepening the connection between people and nature, and empowering Canadians to take a hands-on approach to their urban environments, Evergreen is improving the health of our cities—now and for the future.

Evergreen Brick Works
Evergreen's new home is a community environmental centre in the heart of Toronto's ravine system. It is many things: a vibrant public space featuring a local farmers' market and retail garden centre; a showcase of sustainable design; an educational playground for green living; and an international hub that fosters new ideas in urban innovation.
