ETFO Honours Stratford Teacher for Education and Community Service

TORONTO, Aug. 14 /CNW/ - The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario
(ETFO) today honoured Christine Thrasher, an elementary teacher from Avon
Maitland, for her education and community service.
ETFO President Emily Noble presented the Humanitarian Award for an ETFO
Member to Thrasher at the federation's annual meeting in Toronto. The award is
granted each year to an ETFO member who has given outstanding service to
education and the community. Thrasher was nominated by the Avon Maitland
Teacher Local.
Noble told delegates that Thrasher is know within the board and the
community for her many projects and activities.
"Her hand-drumming program, based upon the philosophy of African Hand
Drumming that emphasizes cooperation, respect, and community, is well
regarded," said Noble. "Students are excited to participate and the program
stimulates the entire school. Lessons taught are far deeper than the obvious
musical ones.
"Outside of school, Chris is extremely active in the community, always
with a focus on helping others. As a singer, she has performed at fundraisers
for a support centre for developmentally delayed adults. She also is Board
chair for the Emily Murphy Centre, a second stage housing facility for women
and children in crisis and has been a volunteer there for nine years.
"Chris believes it is important for her students to understand the
benefits of giving back to the community and so she keeps them up-to-date with
her involvement in the Emily Murphy Centre, allowing them to develop a greater
awareness of social issues and societal responsibilities," Noble said.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents more than
70,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
