MONTREAL, Oct. 2 /CNW/ - Equifax Canada today publicly voiced support for
the government's intention to introduce legislation to criminalize identity
theft at a press conference held by the Minister of Justice, The Honourable
Rob Nicholson, at Complexe Guy-Favreau in Montreal.
The federal government's proposed legislation would criminalize identity
theft in Canada. Identity theft is a serious problem for Canadians: Equifax
Canada statistics show that over the past two years, creditors reported over
45,000 cases of identity theft/fraud.
Equifax Canada's Vice-President of Sales, John LaVecchia, was on hand to
congratulate and support the government on this timely initiative:
"As Canada's largest consumer and commercial credit reporting and
information services company, Equifax Canada would like to take this
opportunity to congratulate the government and, in particular, Minister
Nicholson for recognizing and taking positive action to help address the
growing problem of identity theft throughout Canada," Mr. LaVecchia stated.
Mr. LaVecchia also mentioned that a key strength of this counter-identity
theft strategy is that it involves coordinated efforts from governments,
industry, law enforcement, and consumers.
