Environment Minister Recognizes Municipal Potential in Fight Against Climate Change

OTTAWA, April 26 /CNW Telbec/ - The following statement was released
today by FCM President, Winnipeg Councillor Gord Steeves, following
environment minister John Baird's clean air and climate change announcement in
"We applaud the Minister for recognizing the important role municipal
governments can play in the national fight against climate change. Municipal
governments can help Canada reach its climate change and clean air objectives
by achieving real results to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas
emissions in our communities, and we can start now.
We believe the Minister understands municipal governments are already
making a significant contribution to these important environmental objectives.
They could do more if they weren't struggling under the weight of a
$60-billion infrastructure deficit. The establishment of a domestic offset
system will provide municipal governments with additional incentives to invest
in projects and initiatives that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and
improve air quality.
As for how to get the best and quickest results, municipal governments
recommend further federal investment in public transit, landfill-gas capture,
and a focus on energy efficiency. These investments, combined with municipal
government expertise, innovation and creativity, can make a difference in our
communities almost immediately.
FCM looks forward to working with the Minister to identify opportunities
to work together for cleaner air and to lower greenhouse gas emission in our
communities. We remain committed to working with the Government to mobilize
municipal governments to do their part in reducing GHG emissions and preparing
our communities for the effects of climate change."
