Environment Minister Announces Decision on the Proposed Lennox Island Water Supply Upgrade Project in Prince Edward Island

OTTAWA, Sept. 11 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable John Baird, Minister of
the Environment and Minister responsible for the Canadian Environmental
Assessment Agency, today announced that the proposed Lennox Island Water
Supply Upgrade Project in Prince Edward Island is not likely to cause
significant adverse environmental effects. The Minister has consequently
referred the project back to the responsible authority, Indian and Northern
Affairs Canada, for appropriate action.
The Minister based his environmental assessment decision on the
comprehensive study report, including conclusions and recommendations,
submitted by the responsible authority; results of a 35-day public comment
period; and the implementation of mitigation measures and a follow-up program.
The Lennox Island First Nations is proposing to update the current
drinking water supply, delivery, treatment and to provide additional flow and
volume of water required for fire protection. The design of the water supply
system includes several new water wells, connection of the new wells with the
distribution system, a new pump control building with standby chlorination and
a potable water storage reservoir. The water supply upgrade project is located
on Lennox Island, Prince County, Prince Edward Island.

A copy of the Minister's environmental assessment decision statement can
be found on the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry using reference
number 06-03-17002.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal
environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects
of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of
sustainable development.
