Enbridge Celebrates Launch of Wind Power Project in Kincardine

KINCARDINE, ON, Sept. 25 /CNW/ - With a community barbeque and a visit
from Ontario's Finance Minister Greg Sorbara, the official launch of the
Enbridge Ontario Wind Power Project takes place this evening in Kincardine.
"Enbridge is very excited about starting construction of this major
energy project in Ontario," says Al Monaco, President, Enbridge Gas
Distribution. "Enbridge has a long history of serving customers with
dependable energy and delivering conservation programs and we're committed to
creating new and sustainable energy solutions that will help address the
province's electricity needs. We're proud to celebrate this important
renewable energy milestone with the people of Kincardine. The Minister's
presence here today reflects the growing importance of renewable energy in
Ontario's electricity supply mix and the leadership position taken by this
In mid-July, the project received final regulatory approval from the
Ontario Municipal Board and construction began on access roads for the
80-metre high Vestas V82 wind turbines that will be erected at the 181.5
megawatt wind farm. About one-quarter of the 110 turbines should be
operational by August 2008, with the rest supplying green energy to the
province's power grid by the end of that year.
Sub-contractors to Enbridge have already begun hiring local residents. At
peak construction, the approximately $450 million project will create an
estimated 300 new jobs. The operating facility will generate more than
$300,000 in municipal taxes and provide $550,000 in combined annual lease
payments to project landowners.
"On behalf of the Government, I'd like to thank the residents of
Kincardine and their municipal government for their strong and continuing
support for this wind power project," says Minister Sorbara. "The community's
vision is 'great energy, balanced life', and today they are a giant step
closer to realizing it."
"Their support is also helping the province meet its ambitious target for
renewable energy," continues Sorbara. "In August, the Government announced it
is seeking new generation facilities that will deliver 4,000 megawatts of
green energy by 2025. The Enbridge Ontario Wind Power Project alone will
deliver about 4.5% of that target."

    Enbridge and Clean Energy

While primarily in the energy transportation and distribution business,
Enbridge is making significant inroads into the clean energy technologies of
the future. The company currently has three wind projects generating
electricity in Alberta and Saskatchewan. When the Enbridge Ontario Wind Power
project is fully operational, the four wind projects will have a combined
capacity of more than 250 megawatts, supplying enough electricity to meet the
power requirements of more than 80,000 homes. The projects represent about
4.4 per cent of Canada's total installed wind power capacity.
In 2007, for the third year in a row, Enbridge was named one of the
Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World at the World Economic
Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Enbridge is one of only five Canadian companies

    The Event

The launch ceremony and community dinner begin at 5:00 p.m. at the
Underwood Community Centre, 1240 Concession 6, which is located a short drive
north of the Town of Kincardine along Highway 21. Minister Sorbara, Al Monaco
and Kincardine Mayor Larry Kraemer will address community members attending
the event.
