Empowerment of Women of Colour in Film Awards to open TIFF

"Movies you should take your daughter to"

TORONTO, Sept. 8 /CNW Telbec/ - Not affiliated with TIFF, Madbakh, the
Somali women's group of Toronto, will be handing out awards for themes in
film, producers and actresses that promote empowerment of women of colour on
September 10th, 2009, 7:00. Jean Augustine, first black female MP, will hand
out awards, Khaled Moummar of CAF will MC, and we will receive a message from
Michael Ignatieff, the mayor and Doctors Without Borders. We will also empower
the most vulnerable women in the real way, by raising funds at the gala for a
women's fistula (gynaecological) hospital in Borama Somalia.
Rap videos, slasher films, and more degrade young women, while young
women of colour get a lot of their self concept from film. Therefore we want
to promote films and role models that make them feel empowered. Artist Omar
Djibouti will fly from Ottawa to perform.
Nominations include: Oprah's Precious, Heliopolis, and Scherezade Tell Me
a Story
