Empowering kids to hang up their own clothes

Canadian entrepreneur launches the first hanger that even young children
    can reach

TORONTO, Nov. 1 /CNW/ - Parents now have a powerful weapon in the battle
to get 4-9-year-olds to stop leaving their clothes on the floor: hangers that
kids can reach, even when the clothes-rod is at adult height.
"My daughter Vanessa was very good about putting her toys away at the end
of the day, so we couldn't understand why her clothes always seemed to end up
in a heap on the floor," says Richard Thomson, President and founder of Ezee
Hanger. "Finally it hit me: at 5 years old, she couldn't reach the hangers in
regular closets, so hanging things up was virtually impossible."
Thomson thought about installing child-sized closet inserts, but realized
they weren't always the solution. "Inserts are fine for the kids' bedrooms,
but we wanted Vanessa to get into the habit of hanging up her jacket when she
comes in the front door or through the mudroom," says Thomson, 42. "We needed
a solution that allowed us to be consistent, without having to renovate the
whole house."
The solution: a hanger with a regular-sized hook (so it fit in standard
closets using standard rods), but with a 'shoulder' almost 2 feet lower than a
standard hanger, so even kids as young as 4 could reach it.
The idea was so simple - and such a 'no brainer' for anyone with small
children - that Thomson couldn't believe it hadn't already been invented. But
an extensive search of retail stores and the internet proved fruitless. As
Thomson says: "We realized that if we wanted hangers like this, we were going
to have to make them ourselves."
A few months and several prototypes later, the Ezee Hanger was launched.
Made of child-friendly plastic in 3 colours, the hangers retail for around
than $1 each, which means parents can afford to use them in all the closets
their kids have access to. "All parents know the importance of consistency,"
remarks Thomson. "Putting an Ezee Hanger in their Grandma and Grandpa's front
hall closet, for example, means kids can maintain good habits wherever they
